AC Milan-Cagliari Preview: Allegri faced with several lineup choices

AC Milan will host Cagliari at San Siro for the final match of Serie A this Sunday with three points securing a top 4 finish and participation in Champions League for next season.

Given the high stakes of this particular game, Allegri is bound to be faced with certain puzzles in front of him when it comes to picking the perfect lineup for the occasion. Cagliari come in with okay form, having won 3 games in their last 6, including a 3-2 win over Atalanta. Those wins propelled them into complete safety from relegation, making the outcome of this weekend’s match not too significant for them. However, a match against Milan in San Siro will always bring out the best from opponents, so Allegri and his players will have to give it their all to get the win.

Athekame versus Saelemakers

Perhaps the main predicament Allegri will be in is choosing between Zachary Athekame, who is coming from a very positive performance against Genoa, and Alexis Saelemaekers, who, while in not the best of form is the more trusted and reliable pick for the coach due to having more experience overall. Given the gravity of the match, the decision can go either way, depending on if the momentum is valued more, as opposed to trusting the right midfielder who started the vast majority of the season. Stylistically, Athekame offers more in the final third with his crossing and shooting, while Saelemaekers offers more in the buildup phase with his press resistance and progression.

The midfield

The ever-present right CM question will still be present, with Fofana, Ricci, and Loftus-Cheek competing for the spot. Each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages, and none managed to secure a solid start spot over the season, so the decision between who will play is still up in the air.

Despite suffering a major injury to his face, Modric took the risk to play and was available from the bench in last week game against Genoa. This being the last match Milan plays this season, combined with the murmurings about whether or not Modric himself or even Allegri will be at the club next season, means that, in all likelihood, Modric is going to at least feature for a few minutes. The decision to start Modric over Jashari will be a tough one, but given the importance of the match, Allegri will likely go with the option that gives him the most reliability and predictability, which is the 40-year old.

The attack

Similarly, Leao has been part of rumors to leave the club this summer while suffering from fitness issues as well. He will be available to play after serving his yellow card suspension against Genoa, alongside Pulisic who came from the bench after missing the game against Atalanta with muscle discomfort.

However, is it still a possibility that Allegri deploys the same Nkunku-Fullkrug partnership he did against Genoa since it produced the win and the two Milan star forwards lack 100% fitness. The out-of-form Gimenez will be available to provide a spark from the bench if needed.
