In a column in La Gazzetta dello Sport, former Milan coach Fabio Capello has advocated for Massimiliano Allegri as the next coach of the Italian national team.

By now, Fabio Capello has become a regular in the columns of La Gazzetta dello Sport, with his weekly analyses: after his examination of Milan following the defeat against Udinese, he has also offered his analysis on the Italian national team, which is currently seeking a new coach after the recent World Cup debacle. Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri, currently rival coaches in the top of Serie A, appear to be the most popular names among the candidates for the presidency of the FIGC, with the resulting public debate serving as a backdrop. Capello spoke about this topic this morning in La Rosea, analyzing the debate surrounding who might be better suited to the role between the two coaches.

Capello’s thoughts on Allegri as an option

“Massimiliano Allegri is a very smart guy; he’d quickly understand how the role works, although he’d obviously need some time to settle in. I don’t think the lack of daily tasks that many national team coaches suffer from would be a problem for him – it would just be different. Again, Max is a smart person, so he’d surely learn to adapt very quickly. The initial advantage of Antonio Conte would be his previous experience with the national team; he’d certainly find it easier to settle in immediately. Allegri, on the other hand, has greater communication skills – a factor that’s very important for a national team coach, and perhaps makes him more suitable than Conte, who has been less diplomatic in the past in certain situations.”

Capello’s analysis, then, highlights Massimiliano Allegri’s social qualities as factors that could make him suitable as the coach of the national team – a vacant role that will be very sought-after in the coming weeks.
